Welcome to DVA LAB (Drone Video Analysis Laboratory)
DVA LAB은 제주남방큰돌고래의 서식지 보존을 위해 드론 영상과 인공지능을 활용한 환경 보호 솔루션을 개발하는 팀입니다.
AI팀과 서비스팀으로 구성되어 있으며, 한서우님이 LAB을 총괄하고 이지영님이 AI팀을 이끌며, 돌고래와 선박의 탐지, 거리 측정 등의 핵심 기술을 연구했습니다.
DVA LAB은 기술과 환경 보호의 조화를 통해 지속 가능한 해양 생태계 보존에 기여하는 것을 목표로 합니다.
DVA LAB is a research lab dedicated to developing AI-powered solutions to preserve the habitat of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins around Jeju Island.
The lab consists of two core teams: the AI Team and the Service Team. Seowoo Han leads DVA LAB, overseeing its vision and operations, while Jiyoung Lee manages the AI Team, focusing on key technologies such as detecting dolphins and ships and measuring distances between them.
By combining technology with environmental conservation, DVA LAB aims to contribute to the sustainable protection of marine ecosystems.

Background | 배경
석사 졸업 이후, 한국전자기술연구소에서 컴퓨터비 전 엔지니어로 일을 시작했습니다. 갑자기 찾아온 코로나로 인해 집에 혼자 있는 시간이 늘어났고 무료함을 느꼈습니다. 그러다 우연히 미국에 사는 친구와 연락이 닿아 함께 미국에서 스타트업을 사이드 프로젝트로 창업하게 되었습니다. 한 번도 해본적 없는 기획, 앱개발, 팀 리딩 등 다양한 일을 하면서 기하급수적으로 성장하는 제 자신을 보게 되었습니다. 살면서 가장 가슴 뛰던 순간이었던 거 같습니다. 그렇게 스타트업 씬에 들어오게 되었고, 연구소를 나와 컴퓨터 비전 관련 스타트업에서 CTO를 맡아서 일을 했으며, 현재는 드론 자율주행 회사에서 컴퓨터 비전 엔지니어로 일을 하고 있습니다.
After graduating from my master's degree, I started working as a computer vision engineer at the Korea Electronics Technology Institute. Due to the unexpected corona pandemic, I spent more time at home alone and felt free. Then, I got in touch with a friend in the US and we started a startup in the US as a side project. I saw myself growing exponentially, doing things I'd never done before, like planning, app development, and leading a team. It was probably one of the most exciting moments of my life, and that's how I got into the startup scene. I left the lab and worked as a CTO at a computer vision startup, and now I'm working as a computer vision engineer at a drone autonomy company.
Why I Joined DVA LAB | DVA LAB에 합류한 이유
2021년에 비영리 단체에게 기술적 도움을 준 적이 있어요. 아주 어려운 문제를 기술적으로 풀어준 것은 아니었지만, 제 지식이 해당 비영리 단체에게 시간도 줄여주고, 비용도 줄여주며 그들이 실제 풀고자하는 사회 문제에 집중할 수 있게 도움을 주었어요. 그 때 깨달았어요, '아 내가 가지고 있는 기술력이 세상에 직간접적으로 (다양하게) 도움을 줄 수 있구나'. 그러던 도중 Tech for impact 사업의 파일럿 팀의 팀장 제의가 들어왔어요. 세부적인 것이 정해져 있지 않았고, 무보수였지만 '이것은 운명이다.'라고 생각이 들었던 거 같아요. 어떻게 하면 제 기술로 사회에 도움이 될 수 있을까, 특히 비영리 단체에게 도움을 주고 싶다는 생각이 넘치던 때였거든요. 제안을 받자마자 약 30분만에 수락을 했습니다. 이 프로젝트가 제가 원하던, 생각하던 바로 그것이었기 때문입니다. 이렇게 DVA LAB을 시작했습니다.
In 2021, I provided technical help to a nonprofit organization, not technically solving a very difficult problem, but my knowledge saved them time, saved them money, and allowed them to focus on the social problem they were actually trying to solve, and that's when I realized, 'Oh, my technical skills can help the world directly or indirectly (in various ways)'. Then I got an offer to lead a pilot team for a Tech for impact project. I didn't have any details, and it was unpaid, but I think I was like, 'This is meant to be,' because I was so full of ideas about how I could use my skills to help society, especially nonprofits. When I got the offer, I accepted in about 30 minutes because this project was exactly what I wanted and what I thought it would be. That's how DVA LAB started.

대학에서 산업공학을 전공하며 전공 수업에서 접한 코딩의 매력에 빠졌습니다. 오로지 컴퓨터와 저만 있으면 별다른 비용 없이도 가치를 창출할 수 있다는 것이 저에게 매력으로 다가왔고, 개발이 재미있었습니다.
개발 직군 중 가장 전공과 밀접하게 연결된 분야가 무엇일지 고민하다 AI 개발을 하기 위해 석사 과정을 졸업하였고, 저의 회사를 만들고 싶은 마음에 스타트업 씬에 들어와 AI 엔지니어로 일하고 있습니다.
기술이 어떻게 사용되는냐에 따라 발현되는 가치가 다르다고 생각합니다. 저는 기술로 세상을 조금이나마 좋은 방향으로 바꾸고 싶습니다. 회사에서는 열심히 이윤 창출을 밖에서는 우리 삶에 조금이나마 도움이 될 수 있는 따뜻한 가치를 추구하고 싶습니다.
In college, I majored in industrial engineering and fell in love with coding, which I was introduced to in my major classes. The idea of being able to create value with little to no cost, just a computer and myself, appealed to me, and I enjoyed developing.
After thinking about which field of development was most closely related to my major, I decided to pursue a master's program in AI development and joined the startup scene as an AI engineer because I wanted to build my own company.
I think the value of technology is different depending on how it is used, and I want to change the world for the better with technology. Outside of the company, I want to pursue warm values that can help our lives a little bit outside of the hard work of making profits.
Why I Joined DVA LAB | DVA LAB에 합류한 이유
처음 참여하게 된 계기는 막연하게 세상에 작은 도움이라도 되고 싶다고 생각을 하던 저에게 이런 랩이 있다고 알게 되면서 내가 지금까지 방법을 몰랐던 도움이 되는 방법에 해답을 찾은 것 같아서였습니다.
2기에 한번 더 참여하게 된 이유는 1기를 참여하며 세상에 조그만 도움이 되는 일을 할 수 있던 그 상황을 다시 느끼고 싶어서 입니다. 이 느낌이 저에게는 더 나은 사람이 될 수 있도록 그리고 열심히 살게하는 이유가 되는 거 같아서 좋았습니다. 그 이유와 더불어 1기 때 만든 MVP를 서비스까지로 발전시켜보고 싶다는 생각도 있었습니다 :)
The first time I participated was because I vaguely wanted to make a small contribution to the world, and when I found out about this lab, I felt like I had found the answer to a way to help that I didn't know how to do until now.
The reason why I decided to participate in the second year is that I wanted to feel that feeling again, that I was able to do something that would help the world in a small way during the first year. This feeling was good for me because it gave me a reason to be a better person and to live harder. In addition to that, I also wanted to develop the MVP that I made during the first year into a service :)
